6. Yamaha YZ80/85
We initially wanted to cap the displacement of our 10 coolest minibikes list at 75cc, but we knew there was no way to do that because we absolutely had to have Yamaha’s prolific YZ80/85 on our list.
Face it, just about every vet-aged dirtbike rider either owned a YZ80 at one time, or they wanted to. First introduced in 1974, the YZ80 set the standard for copying all of the technological tricks of its 125cc and 250cc sisters right down to its Monoshock rear suspension sustem. The 1982 YZ80 was the first to introduce liquid-cooling to the mini masses, and the model remains a staple in Yamaha’s motocross family to this day. Armed with a liquid-cooled, 85cc crankcase reed-valve-inducted engine, fully manual, close-ratio six-speed transmission and fully adjustable suspension, the YZ85 is still available in both standard- and big wheel-sized versions.
