4. Go Long or Short, Solo or Team
No one expects you to complete the Baja 500 or the Baja 1000 in your first attempt at off-road racing, although you can if you want to-they have an Ironman class for solo riders, but the beauty of off-road racing is that it offers a veritable buffet of racing sub-genres from desert to woods. You can leave the starting line with hundreds of other off-road racers in a mad dash to the bomb at a hare & hound or you can leave the starting line by yourself and race against the clock at an enduro or rally-style event. And when it comes to distance, grand prix-style races, such as those run in the AMA Big 6 and WORCS series, usually take place on shorter courses of no more than 25 miles in length. But you can compete in a hare & hound and go over 120 miles. Then again, endurance-style events such as the 24 Hours of Glen Helen offer you the opportunity to test yourself by seeing how many miles you can run over the course of a full day! Many events also feature, fun, team-style classes that will either put multiple riders on the same bike or combine the finishes of team members who compete on different bikes to determine the class winner.
