Learning to ride a dirt bike can be a slow, complicated process. Don’t rush it! Put your beginner in a situation where they have control. Not a point-to-point ride, or a situation where they are obligated to keep up with a group. They may want to take a breather, or take a step back for a few minutes to regain composure and go over things in their head. Let them take their time (not only on their first time out, but throughout the learning process). It’s critical to a person’s confidence to feel like they have a sense of control over their situation. If you feel backed into a corner, it stops being fun real fast. Give them the control to do as much as they want, as fast as they want and when they want. Make sure they have an out until they feel they’re ready to take on a long ride or step out onto the track.
