5. 1977 Harley-Davidson MX250
Okay, now we’re getting into the range of machines that we would actually be heading to the Mecum Auction with the intent to actually buy. These are the cream of the crop when it comes to either collectbility, performance heritage, or both. This 1977 Harley-Davidson MX250 is definitely in the former camp, as Harley’s only motocross model never enjoyed much success in racing–although a version of the Harley did win the 1975 SCORE Baja 500 in the hands of Bruce Ogilvie and Larry Roeseler. In AMA motocross competition, however, the MX was always a step behind the Japanese due to Harley’s molasses-like R&D program (the company was condemned to repeat history when it created the VR1000 superbike for road racing in the 1990s). But, it’s a Harley, and all of the ridicule and jokes can’t diminish the MX’s collectible status. It may have been built using Italian Aermacchi parts, but the Harley-Davidson MX250 is an American bike we would love to own just for the sake of owning it.
Our Max Bid: $10,000
The Mecum Antique and Classic Motorcycle Auction returns to Las Vegas, January 25-28. Here’s a dirty dozen for which we’d definitely raise our paddle.
