American Thad Duvall becomes the second World Trophy team member to drop out of the ISDE in Slovakia. So, what happened?
After such a promising start, the nightmare continued for Team USA’s World Trophy team at the 90th running of the International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) in Kosice, Slovakia, today, as another team member has dropped out of the running and the team is now nearly dead last in the World Trophy running order.
Team USA’s Thad DuVall was forced to retire today after his Husqvarna fried a stator before test one, ending any hope that the team could salvage a decent finish in the event. There is still good news in the individual competition, however, as Ryan Sipes continues to lead the event overall after another day in which he won all but two special tests. The motocrosser-turned-off-road racer continues to get stronger with each day, and hopes are high that if he can make it through tomorrow unscathed, he should dominate the motocross special test on the sixth and final day. Sipes currently leads Australia’s Daniel Milner by 44.3 seconds in the individual standings.
And Team USA’s Taylor Robert also had a good day, finishing second to Sipes in the Enduro 2 (E2) category, although Robert’s time is suspended as he is riding under protest for the disqualification he was handed after he missed a secret test yesterday. Failing to navigate that route also wiped out the hopes of Team France and others. If the FIM jury decides to reverse the disqualification, Robert could have as much as 3 hours knocked off his time, which would put him back into individual contention. Likewise, it would give France an opportunity to defend the World Trophy title that it won in 2014.
The USA Junior World Trophy team is still alive and kicking, holding down third place partially on the strength of Grant Baylor’s eighth-place finish in the E2 class today. Grant’s brother and fellow Junior World Trophy team member, Steward Baylor, finished 15th, while World Trophy team member Gary Sutherlin was 17th. Veteran rider Mike Brown continues to run seventh overall in the E3 class after finishing seventh on Day 4.
