2017 KTM 150 XC-W
Based on the KTM 150 XC-W replaces the KTM 200 EXC for 2016, and it, too, benefits from a complete redesign. The 144.99cc, liquid-cooled two-stroke engine is designed to make the mostn produce broad power and mountain conquering torque across the entire rev range, while being extremely compact and light. Out of breath? This little firecracker has your back.
Engine
The XC-W’s displacement is acheieved via a 58mm bore and a 54.5mm stroke to approximate the performance of a 200cc machine stuffed into a 125 chassis. The new engine features a compact cylinder with a new power valve unit that features a sophisticated mechanism for the lateral support exhaust ports. The cylinder is mated to a new cylinder head and a new piston that is optimally shaped for the new combustion chamber. The layout of the water jackets in the cylinder and head is intended to provide the best possible heat dissipation from the high-rev engine. The new crankshaft’s stroke and redesigned engine cases allow the engine displacement to be decreased to 125cc simply by replacing cylinder, piston and head (KTM also sells a 125 XC-W in Europe).
Speaking of the engine cases, the 150 XC-W’s are lightweight die-cast units that feature a high crankshaft and clutch shaft position, located close to the center of gravity. KTM says that this results in optimal mass centralizationy. In addition, the engine body is extremely lightweight and compact, and it is able to house an electric starter. The 150 XC-W also gets KTM’s newly designed engine covers, which feature an advanced surface structure in order to reduce the wear caused by the rider’s boots.
All 2017-model KTM two-strokes receive new Mikuni TMX carburetors. Thes 38mm TMX flat slide carb was selected to replace the Keihin carb after testing showed it to provide smoother, more controllable power all the way up to the limiter. The TMX is also claimed to be less sensitive to and easier to tune for different altitudes and temperatures. The XC-W’s expansion chamber is claimed to be tuned for maximum power.
The XC-W’s wide-ratio six-speed transmission was designed with gear ratios suited for the 150’s power curve and its intended use in the off-road environment. It is compact and designed to be lightweight, and it is operated by KTM’s “No Dirt” gear lever design, which prevents muck from blocking the joint and hampering shifting performance. The XC-W’s clutch is activated by a new hydraulic system made by Brembo instead of Magura. The self-adjusting unit is utilized to deliver light operation and highly controllable clutch modulation.
In addition to receiving all of the chassis changes found on the 2017 KTM Enduro models, including the new chassis design, new WP XPlor suspension, new bodywork and graphics, the 2017 KTM 150 XC-W is also fitted with forged triple clamps that feature a 22mm offset for more precise handling. The handlebar clamp also offers the ability to ajust the handlebars into four different positions to tailor the rider ergonomics.
