KTM released more information on its 2018 line of motocross and off-road motorcycles today, and of course the one that most two-stroke fans have been waiting for is the 2018 KTM 250 XC-W TPI. Unfortunately, only the 250cc version will be available in the U.S. The 2018 KTM 300 XC-W TPI model will not, at least for now.

KTM 250 XC-W TPI
The 2018 KTM 250 XC-W TPI becomes the first mass-produced two-stroke dirtbike to feature electronic fuel-injection. The machine breathes through a 39mm throttle body but places the injectors in the transfer ports to achieve the desired combination of performance and fuel efficiency.

The “TPI” in the model’s nomenlature stands for transfer port injection, a patented EFI system that places the two injectors into the transfer ports of the cylinder. KTM claims that the injector placement solves the issues that have made fuel-injecting two-stroke dirtbikes such a challenge by allowing the desired smooth throttle response while also drastically reducing fuel consumption. KTM calls TPI “a global game changer in terms of technology. Gone is the hassle of jetting, premixing gas and difficult starting.”

The 2018 250 XC-W TPI’s technical highlights include:
KTM 250 XC-W TPI• A new 249cc 2-Stroke engine fitted with a patented TPI fuel injection system designed for perfect fueling at any altitude, no premixing and reduced fuel consumption while still retaining the desired two-stroke performance.
• A new cylinder with two injectors placed in the rear transfer ports for optimal downstream atomization of fuel.
• A new EMS featuring a new ECU controlling ignition timing and fuel based on information from five sensors reading intake and ambient air pressure, throttle position, oil and water temperature to help optimize engine response.
• A new 39mm throttle body by Dell’Orto that features a butterfly valve controlled by a twin cable throttle.
• A new electronic oil pump that feeds oil from a 700cc oil tank to the intake to ensure the proper fuel-oil mix under any condition while reducing smoking by 50% for up to five tanks of fuel.
• An updated WP Xplor 48 upside-down split front fork with new outer tubes for more sensitivity, less stiction and reduced weight. The forks setting have been revised to make it feel stiffer.
KTM 250 XC-W TPI• An updated WP Xplor PDS rear suspension that features stiffer settings.
• New radiator guards designed to provide better airflow in muddy conditions.
• Engine cases that feature a compact shaft arrangement for better mass centralization.
• A cylinder with a twin-valve-controlled power valve for smooth power that can be adjusted within seconds for different track conditions.
• A lateral counterbalancer that reduces engine vibrations and helps reduce rider fatigue.
• A six-speed wide ratio transmission.
• A hydraulically operated DDS clutch that features a damping system for better traction and durability.
• A lightweight Chromoly steel frame designed to provide high torsional rigidity with less longitudinal stiffness for improved handling and energy absorption.
KTM 250 XC-W TPI• PDS Shock mounting geometry that is matched to the aluminum swingarm with a centered location for nearly symmetrical loads to the swingarm.
• Forged aluminum triple clamp with handlebar positions and a 22mm offset for precise handling.
• ODI grips that feature a lock-on design for the left grip and a vulcanized grip on the throttle side.
• A “No Dirt” footpeg design that is intended to keep the peg pivots from becoming clogged with debris.
• CNC-machined hubs, Giant rims and Dunlop tires.
• An airbox and filter design that allows for quick “no tools” air filter changes.
• Bodywork with ergonomics and contact points intended to provide maximum control and comfort.
• A 2.4-gallon see-through polyethylene tank.
• “No Dirt” shift lever prevents dirt from fouling the lever joint.

While the KTM 250 XC-W TPI is the wonderbike of the 2018 KTM line, the Austrian firm will still offer carbureted models across its off-road lineup, including the 2018 KTM 250 XC-W, 2018 KTM 300 XC-W and 2018 KTM 150 XC-W. The 250 XC-W and the 300 XC-W share mostly the same features, except that the 300’s displaces more–293.2cc to be exact–via its 72mm bore, which is 8mm larger than the 250 XC-W’s.
