Why? Because the reigning Monster Energy 250SX West and Lucas Oil 250cc Pro Motocross Champion was showing such tremendous improvement over the six rounds of the 2017 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series. In his rookie year, Webb had gotten off to a rough start, but as he always seems to do, he found his rhythm and began to make serious strides toward the front of the tough of the tough 450cc field, including a career-best third-place finish at the Oakland Supercross. Webb was also running in second place at the Arlington Supercross main event the very next weekend when a flat tire ruined his chances for a second consecutive podium finish.
Then came the Minneapolis Supercross where Webb slammed hard into the ground during a crash in the second 450cc heat race. Although he was able to walk away from the accident, Yamaha later reported that Webb had suffered a shoulder injury and that he would miss the Atlanta Supercross. Today, Yamaha issued another press release to update Webb’s status, and it is more of the same:
Cypress, CA – March 2, 2017 –Monster Energy/Yamalube/Chaparral/Yamaha Financial Services/Yamaha Factory Racing Team rider will miss this Saturday’s Toronto Supercross as he continues to recover from the shoulder injury he sustained two weeks ago in Minneapolis. The announcement was made by Keith McCarty, Motorsports Racing Division Manager for Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A.
It’s not the news that Webb’s fans were hoping for, and certainly not the way that he hoped his season would go when DirtBikes.com conducted our Cooper Webb interview before the season began.
“I was really hoping that I could race in Toronto, but my shoulder is still really sore, and I need to give it a little more time before I can return. I’m doing everything I can to recover–listening to my trainer and rehabbing–and I hope to return to the track soon.”
