KTM North America, Inc., released first-look images and early information on its 2018 KTM lineup of SX two-stroke and four-stroke motocross models today. As with virtually all KTM models, the 2018 SX line has received some updates, although they are not as significant as they were when the 2017 KTM motocross models were unveiled.
KTM singled out the 2018 KTM 85 SX as the machine that has received the most attention. The little orange rocket boasts numerous changes aimed at making the the weapon of choice for aspiring motocross racers. Among them is a new engine that is 1.52 lbs. lighter than the previous engine and is claimed to offer better power and rideability throughout the rev range. The engine is housed in a lighter chro-moly steel chassis and subframe that are crafted by KTM’s in-house suspension and chassis division, WP Performance Systems. The 85 SX also receives WP AER 43 forks and a specifically-developed WP Xplor progressive damping system (PDS) shock absorber (the 85 SX does not feature a rising-rate shock linkage). KTM claims that the 85 SX’s suspension offers better sensitivity with outstanding bottoming resistance and full adjustability.
“Big kid” KTM fans can also expect some changes to KTM’s full-size frame SX motocrossers For 2018, the KTM 125 SX and KTM 150 SX chassis incorporate aluminum head stays, and their engines receive a new CDI control unit to ease starting.
The 2018 KTM SX four-stroke family also benefit from KTM’s rapid R&D turnaround. Like their two-stroke siblings, the 2018 KTM 250 SX-F, KTM 350 SX-F and KTM 450 SX-F boast revised suspension settings in their WP AER 48 forks, along with a factory-looking orange frame and brand new graphics.
“Once again our engineers in the KTM R&D department in Mattighofen, Austria have refined the very successful SX range,” said Joachim Sauer, KTM Product Marketing Offroad. “The adult bikes showcase a sportier look just like the factory bikes with their orange frames, while we’ve also spent some time working on the Mini range for the developing juniors and stars of tomorrow. In particular the incredibly successful KTM 85 SX has had a real overhaul with its new chassis, engine and suspension, which have been re-designed for improved rideability whatever the level of rider. As always these bikes are ready to race right out of the crate, and we look forward to releasing the SX model year 2018 range.”
