To the average motorcyclist, dirtbikes might appear to be cookie-cutter designs when it comes to styling, from their plastic bodywork to their numberplate shapes.
That’s because unlike their streetbike counterparts, dirtbikes aren’t designed to make some sort of fashion statement when going down the road. Instead, these purpose-built machines wear bodywork that is designed to be compact and rugged, able to withstand multiple strikes from rocks and other debris and also from practically inevitable contact from the ground.
But while today’s bikes have more or less evolved in the same direction when it comes to bodywork design, the era from the 1970s to the 1990s saw the dirtbike manufacturers being more creative and individualistic when designing the look of their dirtbikes. Some were more understated than others, and some boasted some unique shapes, particularly when it comes to their numberplate designs.
So, just for the heck of it, we assembled a few of these plate designs, ranging from the 1960s to the 1900s, to test your dirtbike knowledge. Do you remember these numberplate designs? And can you name the bikes that wore them?
