Kyle Regal becomes an AMSOIL Arenacross winner after two extremely close nights of racing in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Husqvarna TiLUBE TUF Racing’s Kyle Regal emerged as the fourth different winner of the 2015 AMSOIL Arenacross season when the series made its first-ever stop at the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colorado, this weekend.
The weekend was highlighted by two intense nights of racing that required tiebreakers to determine overall winners.
Team Babbitt’s Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Chris Blose took control of the first Arenacross main event, grabbing the holeshot ahead of Kiniry and Team Babbitt’s Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Matt Goerke, the championship points leader. Regal ran fifth early in the race, while his teammate Gavin Faith started in seventh and with Friday night winner, Team Babbitt’s Jacob Hayes, ninth.
While Blose led the race, Goerke and Regal were closing in on Kiniry. Regal made move on Goerke on lap 12, but it failed. When he tried again on lap 13, the two made contact, and Goerke hit the ground. Blose held on to take his second main event win of the season, while Kiniry fended off Regal for second place.
Regal overcame a sixth gate pick start in the second main event to take the early lead, with both Kiniry and Hayes right on his rear fender. Blose ran fourth, keeping his hopes for the overall victory in sight, while Goerke slotted into sixth place just behind TZR Woodstock KTM’s Travis Sewell. Regal and Kiniry then traded the lead, which allowed Hayes to make it a three-rider battle for the lead Kiniry and Hayes lost ground to Regal, who cruised to a comfortable win.
Regal’s 3-1 efforts tied him with Kiniry, who posted 2-4 finishes but benefitted from taking the win in the RMATV/MC Head 2 Head Challenge to earn two additional championship bonus points. However, by virtue of his win in the second main event, Regal had the tiebreaker advantage to net his first win of the year. Hayes was second overall, followed by Goerke continued 6-3.
Hayes was the man on the first night, however, as he took control on the opening lap of the first main event, with Faith, Blose and Goerke in tow. That same lap a major incident took several prominent riders out of contention, including Regal, TZR Woodstock KTM’s Travis Sewell, ThermoTec Yamaha’s Bobby Kiniry and Spinechillers Racing KTM’s Willy Browning.
Over the final nine laps Faith consistently ate into Hayes’ advantage. At one point Hayes was making his way by lappers and nearly crashed, which forced him to lose valuable time. Faith used an inside line to make an aggressive move on Hayes and steal the win. Goerke rounded out the top three.
Blose took advantage of an improved starting position off the inversion to grab the lead out of the gate in the second main event. Goerke ran second, just ahead of Slaka Wear KTM’s Steven Mages and Hayes. Faith fought his way through the crowd to start ninth.
Mages saw an opportunity to try and take advantage of an open inside line on Goerke for second, but Hayes also saw an opportunity arise and managed to pass both riders and take control of second. Regal, who started sixth and fought his way into fourth, was able to briefly pass Goerke for third, and the two riders engaged in a heated battle that ultimately allowed Faith, who was on another charge to the front, to surpass his teammate and take control of the fight with Goerke.
Blose, had opened up a substantial lead, only to crash and drop to the back of the pack, handing the lead to Hayes. Not wanting to let a second straight main event slip away, Hayes held on for the win just ahead of Goerke. Faith was third.
Hayes’ 2-1 finishes put him into a tie with Faith, who finished with 1-3 results along with an additional bonus point for winning the RMATV/MC Head 2 Head Challenge. By virtue of the weighted value of finishes in the second main event, Hayes’ victory landed his second overall victory of the 2015 season. Faith finished second while Goerke was third.
