Antonio Cairoli and Valentin Guillod claim second overall wins in as many rounds at MXGP of Great Britain.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli of Italy and Standing Construct Yamaha Yamalube’s Valentin Guillod of Switzerland were the men top beat during round seven of the FIM Motocross World Championship; Cairoli (MXGP) and Guillod (MX2) landed their second consecutive grand prix victories of the season at the MXGP of Great Britain at Matterley Basin in England, Sunday.
Cairoli’s win, which came via 1-3 moto scores, made him the most successful grand prix rider on British soil. The eight-time World Champion claimed his sixth British grand prix win, putting him ahead of the Belgian former champions Stefan Everts and Joel Robert.
“It was amazing today,” Cairoli said. “England has given me a lot of good memories. I am really happy I made the decision to move to the 450cc [because] it makes it much easier for me to keep up with these guys. So, for me, the weekend went perfect. I wouldn’t change anything.”
Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MXGP’s Clement Desalle of France earned two consistent runner-up finishes to tie Cairoli in points but drop to second overall because of Cairoli’s first-moto victory.
“I want to win and have that feeling again,” Desalle said, “Maybe I could have had better lines, but the other guys were riding good, and for me to be consistent, that is also important, so I am happy with that.”
Yamaha Factory Racing Yamalube’s Roman Febvre had plenty to celebrate as he claimed his first MXGP moto win and en route to his second consecutive podium finish, a third overall. Febvre was on the gas all day, and it paid off with a moto two victory over Desalle and Cairoli.
“I am really happy to win [a moto],” Febvre said. “Even when I won I was thinking that I was not on the podium so when I came off the track I was really surprised and it was probably the best feeling ever.”
Red Bull IceOne Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl of Germany didn’t have the best of days in England. Nagl appeared to struggle on the slick and tricky Matterley Basin track. Despite getting good starts, the MXGP series point leader never could find his rhythm, and finished fifth overall, allowing both Desalle and Cairoli to gain on him in the championship chase.
Guillod’d second consecutive MX2 victory was earned via impressive 2-1 finishes. Guillod trailed Red Bull KTM’s Jeffrey Herlings in moto one but came back to win moto two and clinch the overall win.
“It was so fun out there,” Guilllod said. “I was just having a lot of fun, and the fans were having fun, and my team was having fun, so it was just really cool.”
After winning moto one Herlings was hoping to land another MX2 win, but it wasn’t to be, as he could not match Guillod’s pace in moto two and had to settle for second in the moto and second overall.
“I haven’t been able to ride this week because I still have pain from the crash in Spain, so I was pretty stiff.” Herlings said afterward, “and it’s not nice to get beaten, but he [Guiilod] was better today. I just want to win again.”
Reigning MX2 World Champion and Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Jordi Tixier rode to his fourth consecutive podium finish of the year.
