Following Wednesday’s rain, the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National MX Championship delivered comfortable conditions and more great racing Thursday.
The 34th Annual Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship presented by AMSOIL continued Wednesday with the second set of motos at the legendary Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee.
While the Ranch is known for sizzling summer temperatures, a drop in humidity combined with a breeze set up perfect race conditions and made for fantastic racing. Lance Kobusch immediately jumped to the front in Super Mini 1 (12-15), but he fell back to third behind Derek Drake and Garrett Marchbanks. Constant lead changes punctuated the early laps as all three racers took a turn up front. Marchbanks wound up taking the win, improving upon his runner-up finish in the first moto. After suffering mechanical issues in the first moto and finishing in 36th place, Drake proved that he is a top-notch rider by finishing second, and Kobusch finished third.
The best female motocrosser racers in the nation took on the legendary race track for the Women All-Star and Women (14+) moto. After a disappointing 17th-place finish in yesterday’s first moto, Kylie Fasnacht pushed her way into the lead from seventh place on the first lap, and she went on to take the win. It wasn’t easy as first-moto winner Mackenzie Tricker and Kaitlyn Morrow battled out in front, but on the sixth lap Morrow bobbled near the mechanics area, allowing Brandy Richards to move into third place. Fasnacht won, followed by Tricker and Richards. The Women (14+) division came off the line right behind the all-stars with Gracie Van Horn claiming the Bell Holeshot Award, but she would only hold on to the top spot for one lap before Jordan Jarvis took over. Jarvis, Van Horn, and Annie Wernig completed the top three in the moto.
Austin Forkner continued his dominance in the 250cc B division by claiming holeshot and never looking back. The Team Green rider instantly put a large gap between humself and the rest of the class, and that gap eventually worked in his favor because Chase Sexton was charging hard. Sexton bobbled right before the finish line during the white flag lap, allowing Forkner to hang on for the win. The podium was a repeat of moto one with Forkner, Sexton, and Cantrell taking the top three spots.
The second moto for the 250cc A division marked a huge a shakeup from the first moto. Tuesday’s winner Mark Worth had a case of bad luck and found himself in ninth place. Mitchell Harrison tried to claim the top spot on the podium by grabbing the holeshot, but Tristian Charboneau passed him on the second lap. Charboneau looked like he had the race wrapped up until he crashed in the mechanics area, allowing Mitchell Harrison to inherit the lead and take the win. Josh Osby came up short when he tried to make a pass on Charboneau and had to settle for third place Harrison has gone 2-1 in the 250cc A motos, which puts him in a great position for a National Championship if he can keep up his momentum in the third moto.
Charboneau looked for revenge in the 450cc A division, but he again fell short of the win, claiming another second place behind Bradley Taft. No one could stop Taft as he worked his way from fourth to first. Darian Sanayei tried to hold him off, but Taft was just too strong. Charboneau and Sanayei finished second and third respectively.
The Girls Sr. (12-16) class second moto was a replica of the first moto with Hannah Hodges, Jordan Jarvis and Jamie Astudillo, yet in the Girls Jr. (9-13) it was Jazzmyn Canfield, Karly Morgan and Tayler Allred. Levi Newby won the 250vv C division with Richard Taylor second and Salvatore Cusimano third. Haiden Deegan, Sam Garroutte Jr., Emile Lacher and Canyon Richards were all victorious in the 51cc classes.
The 250cc B Limited division saw Jake Masterpool work his way from 10th to fourth and eventually he made a move around Cole Barbieri for third, only to crash and finish in last place. Joey Crown, Enzo Lopes and Michael Mosiman completed the top three.
