1. KTM Freeride E-XC
KTM “shocked” the off-road world when it announced that it was replacing its internal combustion engine-powered Freeride 250R with the Freeride EX-C in 2017, but the performance of the Freeride E-XC has proven to be, dare we say it, electrifying. The Freeride E-XC’s KTM-designed and -manufactured brushless permanent magnet synchronous motor produces a claimed 31 lb.-ft. (42 Nm) of torque from 0 rpm and 22 horsepower a 4500 rpm. Fed juice through a 260V, 2.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that KTM claims can be fully charged in 80 minutes and 80% charged in 50 minutes. Its hybrid steel/aluminum chassis delivers excellent, endure-like handling, and the entire package weighs a respectable 238 lbs. It’s also relatively affordable, priced at $8299.
KTM is continuing to move forward in the electric dirt bike market with a 2018 Freeride E-XC, and the company recently announced plans to produce a youth-sized electric dirt bike, phasing out some of its two-stroke models. With excellent performance and a strong dealer network, the KTM Freeride E-XC is our favorite electric dirt bike of 2017.
