Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Mike Brown and Colton Haaker claim the top two spots at the GEICO AMA EnduroCross in Salt Lake City, Utah, Saturday night.
Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Mike Brown stepped up and earned his first GEICO AMA EnduroCross round since 2013 when round two of the 2015 series visited Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah, Saturday night.
Both Brown and teammate Colton Haaker won their respective heat races and advanced directly to the main event. In the main, Brown netted the holeshot, with Haaker moving into second place. Haaker then collided with another rider and crashed, remounting in sixth place.
While Brown built a 5-second lead, Haaker worked his way back through the field into third place by lap 10 before making an aggressive pass to move into second place. Brown continued to maintain a fast pace out front, Haaker continued to reel him in, and the two riders were only about a bike length apart, heading into the last lap. Coming into the rock corner, Haaker moved alongside Brown, but he couldn’t make the pass, and Brown held on for the win with Haaker a close second.
“I had a great day! It went good from the start of the day by winning the heat race, then getting the super pole for the final for the first gate pick in the main,” Brown said. “Got the holeshot and rode the best I could without making too many mistakes to get the win.”
Despite finishing second, Haaker admitted that he had a pretty good night.
“I was close behind Brown, but another rider came into me pretty hard, and I had to fight to get back to second,” he said. “I had a good time chasing down Brown, and look forward to the next round and a possible win.”
Haaker’s runner-up finish tied him with defending GEICO AMA EnduroCross Champion Cody Webb, who finished fourth behind Beta USA’s Max Gerston, in the series point standings; Webb and Haaker each have 45 points each. Brown is only two points behind them, with 43.
The 2015 GEICO AMA EnduroCross Series continues with round three at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, May 1.
