Canadian off-road racer and journalist Lawrence Hacking plans to compete in the 2016 Baja Rally aboard a Honda Africa Twin.
Bajarallymoto.com has announced that Canadian off-road racer and moto-journalist Lawrence Hacking plans to compete aboard a Honda CRF1000 Africa Twin in the 2016 Baja Rally in the 2016 Baja Rally in Ensenada, Baja Calfornia, Mexico, October 10-15.
Hacking has been invited to contest the “invitation only” Expert ADV class in the Baja Rally, which spans five-days and covers nearly 1000 miles of the rugged Baja California Peninsula. He is cautiously optimistic about his chances for a class win.
“I have to be realistic,” Hacking said. “My goal is simply to finish and based on my experience with the new Honda and from what the course was like last year I think it is entirely feasible. I can’t wait to face the the challenge head on.”
Hacking has been training regularly in the off-season and is heading to Portugal for a week of off-road riding with 10-time Dakar Rally rider Simon Pavey.
“Riding with Simon will be another chance to learn from one of the best GS-style training instructors in the world.,” Hacking said. “I am really looking forward to the opportunity to discover the back roads of the Algarve Portugal.”
Hacking has raced motorcycles since 1971 and ridden in more than 50 countries Worldwide. He is a six-time International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) competitor, and he was the first Canadian to complete the Paris-Dakar rally in 2001, after which he authored a book about his adventure, To Dakar and Back.
