TwoTwo Motorsports Kawasaki’s Chad Reed confirms multiple injuries from San Diego SX crash.
It took visits to two different hospitals to confirm what everyone knew, that TwoTwo Motorsports Kawasaki rider Chad Reed suffered serious injuries in a last-lap crash at the San Diego Supercross last night.
The 32-year-old, two-time Monster Energy AMA Supercross Champion had been attempting to make a last-lap pass on Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen when he lost control of his Kawasaki in a rhythm section and slammed right shoulder first into the face of a jump. The violent crash has left Reed with a broken collarbone, broken scapula and a broken T1 vertebrae. Reed was transported by ambulance to one San Diego hospital where he spent the night under observation, but after declaring on his Twitter feed, “I’m not confident in this hospital so I’ll let y’all know when I know more. Still not 100% sure what’s up. Trying to check myself outta hospital so I can go get scans X-ray & MRI.”
Reed did manage to switch hospitals today, and once the test results revealed the severity of his injuries.
“So not the news I wanted, 3 broken bones 1) scapula 2) collarbone 3) T1,” Reed tweeted. “Explains the pain I guess.. Sometimes things don’t make sense. It’s that love/hate relationship you have with racing. But every Saturday night they drop the gate.”
And as bad as the crash was, Reed said that he intends to try to be on the starting line for the next race in Dallas, Texas, next Saturday night.
In 6 days I plan to be there!” Reed tweeted. “Thanks for all the prayers. Hope to make y’all proud to be TwoTwo supporters.”
Providing that Reed is medically cleared to race in Dallas, to be able to ride at all would be a Herculean effort. To ride and be competitive would border on the miraculous. Either way, when you consider what he has accomplished already during his career, don’t count him out.
