Rain ruins the start of the 2016 Dakar Rally in Argentina; event to begin with Stage 2 tomorrow.

Following a tragic car-related cancelation of yesterday’s prologue, the opening stage of the 2016 Dakar Rally was canceled today due to inclement weather.
The bad weather wasn’t necessarily bad enough to affect the course in the opening stage from Rosario to Villa Carlos Paz in Argentina, but it was sufficient to force the grounding of the emergency helicopters needed to guarantee the safety of participants, according to rally officials. With the cancelation, the competitors paraded to the end of the stage where they hope to begin the rally in earnest with Stage Two tomorrow.
After the motorcycles already completed it, yesterday’s 11-kilometer prologue turned tragic when a Mini Cooper driven by competitor Guo Meiling of China went off the road outside of Rosario and crashed into the crowd, injuring eight spectators—two of them critically. Barreda and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Ruben Faria tied for the fastest time in the prologue, each man completing the section in 6 minutes and 27 seconds.
