Dakar Rally organizers have confirmed the death of of motorcycle competitor Michal Hernik during Stage 3 today.
The organizers of the Dakar Rally have released information confirming the death of motorcycle competitor Michal Hernik of Poland, 39, during Stage 3 from San Juan to Chilecito, Argentina, today.
Hernik, 39, was found dead on the selective section of the third stage of the rally between San Juan and Chilecito at kilometer 206. The exact cause of his death has not yet to be determined, as reports indicate that he did not show any outward signs of having suffered a crash.
The loss of Hernik’s Irritrack signal was detected by race control, which was subesequently informed that he had not completed the special stage at 15:16. A search for Hernik began at at 15:23. An ambulance helicopter found him 300 meters off the rally route at 16:03. The on-board doctor confirmed his death shortly thereafter.
A rookie in the Dakar Rally, had previously participated in the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge in 2014 and the Morocco Rally in 2013, both of which he completed. He was running running 84th overall in the Dakar Rally at the time of his passing.
