The vet race that honors the legendary Dave Coombs Sr. will feature motocross racing, a Grand Prix and activities for the entire family.
The influence that the late Dave Coombs Sr. had on the sports of motocross and off-road racing is so profound that it is hard to imagine where AMA-sanctioned motorcycle racing would be today without it.
Imagine a sport devoid of the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch or the prestigious Grand National Cross Country championship. Both are Coombs creations. The visionary promoter even produced an event that was the forerunner to the Hard Enduro craze, the legendary Blackwater 100. “DC”, together with his wife and partner Rita, was a driving force in shaping the disciplines of motocross and off-road motorcycle racing as we know them today. Coombs passed away on August 3, 1998 after a brave battle with leukemia. He was 57 years old.
The 25th Annual DC Vet National Championship weekend returns to Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania on Saturday and Sunday, September 26-27 to celebrate Coombs’ spirit and his immense contribution to the sport while offering participants a “throwback” weekend of fun and competition as the veterans of motocross ake over the legendary High Point Raceway. To honor Big Dave’s passion and commitment to vet riders, Sunday’s Vet Motocross National offers classes for vet ages 25+ 30+, 35+, 40+, 45+, 50+, 55+ and 60+ with a variety of options for different skill levels. But perhaps the most exciting spectacle will be the Vintage bike classes, where riders can compete on vintage bikes in the following categories: Retro (1982-1996), Millennium (pre-2006) dual disk, and Vintage twin shock (pre-1975/1975+ dual drum). And, so as not to forget the youngsers, this year’s event will also feature 65cc Open, 85cc Open, Schoolboy and 18+ support divisions with the goal of creating a family-fun atmosphere for all ages.
After the racing action on Saturday, there will be live music entertainment, along with a $5 barbeque dinner for everyone. Bench racing and retro films will accompany the dinner, along with a bonfire–families are welcome to bring marshmallows and s’mores to enjoy.
