It was a great night to be a Red Bull KTM rider when the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series visited AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Saturday night.

Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey led every lap of the 450cc main event, joining runner-up Ken Roczen and third-place finisher Trey Canard as a two-time 450cc winner in the 2015 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series, while teammate Marvin Musquin set the tone for the AMA 250cc East Supercross Championship by winning the opening round in the region. Dungey’s win was the 16th 450cc Supercross win of his career, and it tied him for 13th with Jean-Michel Bayle on the all-time winner’s list. Musquin’s win was the fifth 250cc Supercross win of his career, all of them coming in the Eastern region.

450cc Main Event

Dungey was fast in his heat race, taking the win to claim the first starting gate pick for the 20-lap main event. Team Honda HRC’s Trey Canard won the second heat race and would start with the second pick.

Dungey pulled the holeshot to lead Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Davi Millsaps second and Yoshimura Suzuki’s Blake Baggett third, ahead of Roczen and Canard. The other championship contender, Tomac, suffered a ninth-place start and tried to charge his way into contention, taking down former supercross champion Chad Reed in the process. Tomac would drop back again when he hooked a rut and went over the high-side.

Dungey got off to a flying start in the 450cc main, leading by nearly 6 seconds at one point. In the end, he cruised to the win by 3.7 seconds.

Roczen made his way past Baggett for third place on lap two with Canard following him to drop Baggett to fifth place. The top five running order would stay that way until lap six when Roczen got underneath Millsaps in the left-hander right after the finish line jump to move into second place. Thing went from bad to worse for Millsaps when he looped out over one of the kicker jumps just before the finish line, handing third place to Canard. Millsaps got up slowly from the crash and was unable to continue.

Dungey held a 2.9-second lead over Roczen at the halway point in the race, with Canard another 3.8 seconds behind Roczen in third place, Baggett ran fourth, 9.9 seconds behind Dungey, with BTO Sports KTM’s Andrew Short running fifth, ahead of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Jason Anderson. Tomac was back up to seventh place, with TwoTwo Motorsports/Discount Tire Kawasaki’s Josh Grant, RCH Soaring Eagle/Jimmy John’s Suzuki’s Broc Tickle ninth and Toyota/JGR Yamaha’s Phil Nicoletti 10th.

Ken Roczen couldn't catch Dungey in the main event, but the two-time season winner still finished a solid second.

Roczen was simply unable to cut into Dungey’s lead as the race progressed. Dungey’s lead grew to 5.7 seconds with five laps to go, and all Dungey had to do was avoid a mistake to claim the win. Dungey kept it clean to the finish, winning the race by 3.7 seconds over Roczen, with Canard third.

“That holeshot was key, and I knew it from the beginning,” Dungey said. “You don’t want to stress on it because you’ve got to let it happen. We got out like a rocket ship. I saw the inside was open, I tucked in, controlled the first turn, and then from there I just tried to lay the laps as best I could. I just wanted to get out and do my best. These wins are nice. It’s nice to celebrate, and it makes you hungry, so that’s cool.”

250cc East Main Event
Musquin won heat two, the faster of the two heats, to qualify number one for the 15-lap 250cc main event, and reigning AMA 250cc East Supercross Champion Justin Bogle won the opening heat to qualify second. These two riders were on top of the running order when the field poured into turn one, with Musquin getting the holeshot, followed by Bogle and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Martin Davalos, the latter seeing his chances for the win all but disappear when he tucked the front end and crashed in turn one. That allowed Yamalube/Star Racing Yamaha’s Anthony Rodriguez to slide into third, ahead of JAB Motorsports Kawasaki’s Matt Lemoine and privateet Kawasaki rider Joey Savatgy.

Marvin Musquin scored the win in the opening round of the AMA 250cc East Supercross Series. The French rider celebrated his fifth career 250cc East win with a classic heel clicker over the AT&T Stadium finish line.

The front five riders began to spread out quickly, with Musquin pulling a whopping 4.3-second lead over Bogle in just the first five laps. Bogle had another 3.9 seconds on Roridugez, while Savatgy and Lemoine swapped positions, with Savatgy hounding Rodriguez while Lemoine came under increasing pressure from reigning Lucas Oil 250cc Pro Motocross Champion Jeremy Martin on the Yamalube/Star Racing Yamaha.

Musquin appeared to be extremely relaxed as he maintained his lead out front. Bogle was able to keep the gap to within 5 seconds through the halfway point, but he simply didn’t have the speed to run down Musquin. But the complexion of the race changed when AG Motorsports Honda rider Kyle Cunningham crashed hard right at the finish line jump while running in ninth place, bringing out a red flag. Cunningham was able to walk away from the crash, but he was obviously through for the night.

The race was reverted back to lap six and restarted via staggered, single-file restart, but it still gave Bogle and the rest of the field a chance to overtake Marvin Musquin. No one could, as Musquin immediately began to check out again, giving KTM its second AMA 250cc Supercross win of the season (Jessy Nelson scored a win in the West series).

Musquin built up a strong lead though the first half of the main event, only to have to relinquish it due to a red flag on lap seven. Musquin picked up right where he lefdt off when the race got back underway.

“I’ve had some pretty bad injuries—two times torn my ACL in four years that I’ve been in the U.S., so I feel like this year is the year,” Musquin said. “Two years ago was supposed to be the year also, so I just want to enjoy the time. I’m 25 years old. Those guys are like 18, 20 years old, but I don’t mind. I like it a lot. We’ve got to keep going now. There are more races to come.”

Bogle was unable to catch Musquin, but the reigning series champion still finished a solid second place in the first race of his title defense.

The race for third was a nail biter, as Rodriguez tried to fend off Savatgy, Martin and Lemoine with six laps to go. All four riders hit the whoop section together, with Savatgy going to the inside of Rodriguez while Martin went to the outside. Both men passed Rodriguez with Savatgy having the better line to take third place ahead of Martin. Lemoine also passed Rodriguez to move into fifth place, and a lap later he was able to triple past Martin to take fourth place. However, Savatgy managed to make it to the finish line third to capture the final podium spot.
