The following is from Feld, Inc., promoter of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series:
After one of the most successful seasons in the history of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, Ryan Dungey has been nominated for a second straight year for Best Male Action Sports Athlete at this year’s ESPY Awards, ESPN’s annual gala that celebrates the past year’s major sporting achievements.
The Red Bull KTM rider was nominated for his accomplishments during the 2016 season when he claimed his third 450SX Monster Energy Supercross title, winning nine of 17 races. In 2016, Dungey made the podium in 16 of 17 Main Events. He now holds the all-time Monster Energy Supercross record for podium finishes with 31 in a row.
Dungey was nominated in 2015 for an ESPY Award for Best Male Action Sports Athlete, ultimately winning the award and notching a significant milestone not only for himself, but for the sport of Supercross as a whole. Last year, Dungey was the first athlete not named Nyjah Huston or Shaun White to win the award in this category since 2007. His ESPY victory in 2015, along with this second nomination, emphasizes the impact motorsports is making in mainstream action sports.
The ESPYs highlight both sport-specific accomplishments and best-in-sport winners as to pit nominees from different sports against each other. Top celebrities from sports and entertainment gather to the award show to commemorate the past year’s major sports achievements, remembering unforgettable moments and honoring the elite performers and performances. This year’s ESPY Awards will be hosted by WWE Superstar John Cena and broadcast live on ABC, Wednesday, July 13, at 8:00 p.m. ET.
Dungey faces off against the likes of freestyle skiing champion Gus Kenworthy, snowboarding sensation Mark McMorris, and skateboarding all-stars Nyjah Huston and Pedro Barros in the Best Male Action Sports Athlete category.
