Former FIM World Enduro II Champion Alex Salvini is scheduled to race the AMSOIL GNCC in Indiana this weekend.
Alexi Salvini of Italy, the 2013 FIM Enduro II Champion, is planning a visit to America to contest the final round of the AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) series, the AMSOIL Ironman, in Crawfordsville, Indiana, this weekend.
Salvini will test his mettle in the premier XC1 Pro class against the likes of reigning GNCC Champion Kailub Russell and former champions Charlie Mullins, Paul Whibley and Josh Strang. The class will be even tougher at the Ironman, as reigning XC2 Pro Lites Champion Grant Baylor is stepping up to the XC1 Pro class after having clinched the Pro Lites title at the penultimate round of the series. Salvini rides for the Zanardo Honda team in the World Enduro Championship, but he will be aboard a Johnny Campbell Racing Honda CRF450R at the AMSOIL Ironman.
“I’m confident I can count on the experience and the professionalism of Johnny Campbell and his team,” Salvini said. “I’d like to thank my team Honda Zanardo, Honda Europe, Honda USA and of course Johnny Campbell for this extraordinary occasion.”
The AMSOIL Ironman is a three-hour test of man and machine, mixing riverbanks, tricky uphills and downhills and numerous technical sections on rocky, tight trails and through creeks. There are also wide-open fast sections through harvested cornfields, making the AMSOIL Ironman a good test of all-around skill.
Salvini, of Italy, successfully defended his Italian Enduro Championship title this season and finished second in the World Enduro II Championship for the Honda Zanardo team. The AMSOIL Ironman will mark his first race in the U.S.
“I’m very excited for this new adventure” Salvini said. “Considering the injuries I have had already in the pre-season, I’m happy with the second position in the Enduro World Championship and to have conquered the Italian crown for the third year in a row. Now that the season is over I can discover the Enduro world in the USA without any pressure. I’m curious to understand the level of the U.S. series. The format is very different from what we are used to, with three hour-long races and a motocross-style start.”
Salvini attended the American International Motorcycle Expo in Orlando, Florida, last week, before heading to Tennessee for some testing time. After this weekend’s AMSOIL Ironman GNCC, he plans to travel to Baja California, Mexico, for vacation.
