The Glen Helen track design for the upcoming Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship opener embraces the track’s iconic features while also adding a few new twists.
When the world’s best professional motocross racers invade Southern California’s Glen Helen Raceway for the 2014 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship opener, they will have to deal with an all-new track design and layout that incorporates the track’s most notorious and iconic obstacles, while also providing several new elements.
Track designer and longtime Motocross Action Magazine Editor Jody Weisel, once again the creative mind behind the design and layout of the Glen Helen national track, has worked with renowned track builder Karl Scanlon to execute Weisel’s design for the race, which will mark the first time that the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship has been contested at the venue since 2009.
With an enormous multi-discipline facility that features a short-course off-road track, autocross course, miles of off-road trails, three supercross tracks and perhaps the largest motocross circuit in the country, Glen Helen has a unique quality in that multiple sections of the property can be utilized to challenge riders with a one-of-a-kind layout. During the track’s 16-year duration as a round of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, it has earned the reputation as one of the most unique, diverse, and challenging motocross tracks on the planet, according to Davey Coombs, Presidet of MX Sports Pro Racing.
“Glen Helen means motocross in Southern California, and everyone involved with the series is thrilled to be returning again,” Coombs said. “To lead off the series with a track as challenging and spectacular as Glen Helen means that we’re going to know right away who’s ready to compete for the championship.”
The 2014 track boasts 17 major sections and includes dramatic elevation changes, high-speed and highly technical zones with various terrain. Its signature elements, such as the longest start straight in the series, the banked “Talledaga” first turn, “Mt. Saint Helen,” and “Saddleback Ridge” are prominently featured, while new obstacles like the “Velodrome” and a revamped sand section have the potential to create their own legacy during the race weekend. The addition of the “Fan Central” area for spectators will provide an exhilarating experience for those in attendance, thanks to rally towels that will be handed out for the sole purpose of cheering on the athletes and living up to the track’s motto “Feel the Speed!”
The Red Bull Glen Helen National opener kicks off Saturday, May 24 in San Bernardino, California For additional information on the series, visit www.promotocross.com.
