Jacob Hayes was the man to beat at the AMSOIL Arenacross Series’ second straight stop in the Evergreen State.
Team Babbitt’s Monster Energy/AMSOIL Kawasaki’s Jacob Hayes scored his fourth overall win of the 2015 AMSOIL Arenacross season and his first in the playoff-style Race to the Championship when he scored a 1-1 sweep of the Arenacross main events at the Tacoma
Dome on April 18.
Hayes set the tone for the night when he grabbed the holeshot in the first Arenacross main event, with Team Babbitt’s teammates Chris Blose and Matt Goerke running second and third. Hayes opened up his lead as Goerke slipped past Blose into second on the opening lap. From there, the top three settled into a rhythm out front.
Race to the Championship point leader Kyle Regal had to overcome an eighth-place start, and he fought to get his TiLube Tuf Racing Husqvarna to the front. Regal was up to sixth place by lap six.
Hayes went on to take the win ahead of Goerke and Motosport.com/Haeseker Racing KTM’s Gared Steinke after Blose went off the track and crashed while navigating the track’s wall obstacle. Babbitt’s Online Suzuki’s Cory Green finished fourth, while Regal fought his way up to fifth. Blose’s misfortune left him with a 10th-place finish.
Hayes selected the inversion for the second main event, and he ended up selecting the number 8, meaning half of the field would be inverted for the second Areancross main event. Despite his eighth gate pick, Hayes went straight to the head of the class off the start once again, leading Steven Mages and ThermoTec/FMC Racing Yamaha’s Bobby Kiniry. Goerke was able to slot into fourth, with Regal fifth.
It didn’t take long for Hayes to pull clear of the field, but Goerke was the real rider on the move in the early laps, passing Kiniry for third on three and challenging Mages for second place. Goerke would take over the spot in lap eight. That same lap Kiniry pulled off the track with an apparent issue and was unable to continue, which allowed Regal to move into fourth ahead of hisTiLube, TUF Racing Husqvarna teammate, Gavin Faith. Regal passed Mages for third on lap 11, setting the top three finishers. Hayes was the obvious overall winner, but Goerke’s pair of runner-up finishes also gave Team Babbitt’s a 1-2 overall sweep.
Regal’s third-place finish in the second main event moved him into third overall (5-3), but more impoertantly it allowed him to extend his championship point lead by two more points. Regal now has an eight-point lead over Hayes, whose wins in Tacoma moved him from fourth to second. Goerke also moved up from fifth to third and is now 11 points back.
The Western Regional Arenacross Lites Class Main Event saw College Hunks Hauling Junk/Spinechillers Racing KTM’s Dave Ginolfi take the early lead over Mages and Art of Smiles/Kropp Construction KTM’s Josh Struebig. Ginolfi and Mages battled for the lead, with Mages taking control on lap five. Mages maintained control of the position while Mark Worth moved up and eventually made his way around Ginolfi for second on lap 10. Mages crossed the line ahead of Worth, while Ginolfi rounded out the podium in third.
