Rocky Mountain ATV-MC/KTM/WPS’ Davi Millsaps knows a thing or two about how to get around a motocross or supercross track, and one area where the lanky veteran is especially quick is in rutted corners.
In this video installment on the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC YouTube channel, Millsaps offers a solid tutorial on what to do and what not to do when tackling corners where your wheels will be swallowed by a canyon-like rut. It can be a bit unnerving, and the tendency for a lot of novices is to panic and fail to commit, which often leads to the bike standing up in the rut and pitching the rider over the high side. The lack of desire to attempt rutted corners will often lead to the decision to take a smoother alternate line that is usually outside of the rut. That’s fine, except it’s usually the longer way around the corner. That could cost you time, and time is critical in motocross. The rider who can successfully negotiated a rutted corner will almost always post a quicker lap time than the rider who goes around it.
Listen to what Millsaps has to say and put those words into practice, however, and you’ll be acing the ruts in no time. Start slow and build your speed, and eventually it will be one more technique that you can use to make yourself a better rider.
