KTM’s Two-Strokes return for 2016; 125 SX and 150 SX deliver more power, less weight.
KTM has popped the lid off the information for its 2016 two-stroke models which encompass a broad range or rider age and ability. The Austrian motocross powerhouse specifically addressed its 125cc and 150cc SX models, which are lighter and more powerful than previous versions. Its 250 SX, 85 SX and 65 SX return for 2016 with minor updates.
2016 KTM125 SX
The 125 SX gets a new 124.8cc engine that is claimed to be more compact and 4.4 pounds less than its predecessor. The engine features a new cylinder with revised ports and a newly designed power valve unit with a sophisticated mechanism for the lateral exhaust ports to give the bike what KTM calls a massive performance increase over the entire rev range. Other features include a new piston and a lighter crankshaft that has been carefully balanced for to reduce vibration. The 125 SX’s all-new die-cast engine cases raise the crankshaft and clutch shaft with the goal of centralizing mass and improving handling. Last but not least the engine gets a new expansion chamber tuned specifically to extract max power from the 125 SX motor.
The 125 SX may feature the same gear ratios as before, but its six-speed transmission is new, with lighter and narrower gearsets. The shift lever is one of KTM’s new “No Dirt” designs that is intended to prevent dirt from fouling the lever joint to ensure proper shifting in any condition.
Like the four-stroke MX models, the two-strokes get new chromoly steel frames that are designed to provide higher torsional rigidity with less longitudinal stiffness. KTM says that this results in improved handling and energy absorption. The chassis also incorporates a new, smaller and lighter subframe design made with new aluminum profiles and a lighter swingarm that features a revised internal structure to tailor the chassis to KTM’s handling goals. Suspension front and rear is by WP, with a 4CS (Four Chamber System) fork up front and a WP shock with a new linkage/pullrod system out back.
Other accessories include new “No Dirt” footpeg design that provides a larger surface area and features a “scraper” to reduce dirt build-up in the hinge and a new CNC-machined upper triple clamp with a rubber damping system for the new Neken handlebar and ODI lock-on grips. Lightweight Galfer Wave rotors, CNC machined hubs, high-end Excel rims and Dunlop GEOMAX MX32 tires are standard equipment on the 125 SX

2016 KTM 150 SX
Like the 125 SX, the 150 SX engine is new and more compact than before. KTM claims that it weighs four pounds less while being more powerful than ever. The new ponies come courtesy of such changes as a new cylinder with revised ports and the new-design power valve unit that is claimed to deliver a massive performance increase over the entire rev range. Other shared updates to the 150 SX include a new piston and a lighter, better balanced crankshaft to help reduce engine vibration. The 150 SX also gets the all-new die-cast engine cases that raise the crankshaft and clutch shaft to centralize mass and improve handling. The 150 SX also gets a new exhaust pipe that has been tuned specifically to extract as much power from its 143.99cc motor as possible.
The 150’s new six-speed transmission provides the same gear ratios while being lighter and narrower, and its gear changes are actuated by a “No Dirt” shift lever that helps to ensure smooth and precise shift action. Chassiswise, the 155 SX and the 150 SX are identical, and the 150 SX benefits from all the changes made to the 125.

2016 KTM 250 SX
KTM didn’t make as many changes to its quarter-liter “diesel” as it did to the tiddlers, but there are some noteworthy upgrades to the 250 SX for 2016. For starters, the 250 SX’s CNC-machined triple clamp is new, featuring a 22 mm offset and new handlebar rubber damping system to help reduce vibration to the rider and thus reduce rider fatigue. The 250 SX’s wheels are now laced with lighter spokes to reduce the weight of each wheel by 100 grams. The wheels are shod with Dunlop Geomax MX32 tires, and the machine is slowed by Brembo brakes with new, lighter Galfer Wave rotors.

2016 KTM 65 SX/85 SX
KTM boasts that its 65 SX and 85 SX machines offer cutting-edge two-stroke technology, and both are obviously inspired by the larger machines in the line. Their high-performance, power valve-enhanced two-stroke engines, hydraulic clutches, six-speed transmissions and WP suspension are designed for the rigors of top-level junior competition.
The 65 SX has received more updates for 2016 than the 85 SX. The 65 SX gets all-new bodywork designed to improve ergonomics for maximum freedom of movement and minimum contact along with a more comfortable seat. The 65 SX’s handlebars are also new, made of a high-quality aluminum alloy, and a new crash pad on the handlebar brace helps to protect the rider from impacts. The 65 SX also receives a reworked kickstarter that makes starting even easier than before.
The graphics for both the 65 and the 85 are inspired by the full-size SX bikes, as is the rugged black polymer coating that adorns the frame of both machines.
