New European dirtbike brands are always a lightning rod in the off-road world, and Portugal-based AJP is hoping to divert some of that electricity to a country not as well known for producing great motorcycles as its Austrian, Italian and Spanish neighbors by bringing three of the models in its four-bike lineup to America in 2016.

By the way, AJP stands for Antonio J. Pinto, the founder of the company. AJP as a motorcycle manufacturer is nearly 30 years old, but the its latest off-road machines, the PR5R, PR5, PR4 and PR3 have only been circulating for the past few years. Now, AJP is ready to take a crack at landing customers for the brand in the good ol’ U.S. of A. Initially, AJP will be doing this with two models, the PR5R, the PR4 and the PR3. The PR5R is the company’s full-blown competition model, while the air-cooled PR4 and PR3 might best be described as hard-core, do-it-all playbikes.

2016 AJP PR5R, $6199
The highest-performance model in the AJS line, the PR5R is a step up from the standard PR5. Its liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, SOHC, four-valve Single is wrapped in a frame that consists of aluminum and steel construction with the fuel tank located under the seat for better mass centralization. The PR5R uses such name brands as Sachs suspension and Michelin tires in its mix of components. In fact, the PR5R comes equipped with a Michelin S12 XC out back and a Michelin FIM enduro tire up front. Other changes for 2016 include a redesigned tank with a new, high-pressure fuel pump inside it that the company claims will provide better flow to the injector. The injector itself has been redesigned to deliver a finer fuel mist through the PR5R’s 34mm throttle body. The result, says AJP is improved throttle response and feel.

Other updates for 2016 include a billet aluminum Reikon clutch perch assembly. The anodized perch and lever feature a larger pivot with a bearing to deliver a more linear clutch feel, and the perch is able to rotate on the bars on a nylon sleeve in the event of a crash. The perch’s quick-adjust feature facilitates cable tension adjustment when riding. The 2016 PR5R also receives new graphics.

One thing missing on the 2016 PR5R is the sidestand auto-retract. AJP has instead gone to a normal pivot bolt in place of the older one that had a pin in the head of it. The change allows the kickstand to stay in the down position even with no weight on it, plus it will retract normally when pushed rearward.

2016 AJP PR4/PR3, $4995/$4799

AJP’s air-cooled off-road models, the PR4 and PR3 use the same two-valve four-stroke engine architecture, five-speed transmission and alumuinum steel chassis, but they differ in fork selection and in wheel size.

The PR4 uses a Marzocchi 40mm fork whereas the PR3 uses an in-house AJP 38mm fork. Both forks are adjustable for compression and rebound. The PR4 also sports a little more travel than the PR3, 10.2 inches versus 10 inches up front, and 11.8 inches for 11.0 inches out back. AJP also offers a lowering link for both models so that the customer can reduce their respective 36.4-inch and 34.4-inch seat heights by 1 inch (at the tradeoff of a slight reduction in rear suspension travel and ground clearance). The lowering link is shipped with every PR4 and PR3 model at no additional charge. In the wheel department, the PR4 uses the common full-sized 21-inch front and 18-inch rear rims with Michelin rubber, an FIM Enduro front and S12 XC rear. The PR3 sports a 19-inch front and 17-inch rear rim.

Both machines receive a new fuel tank design with an improved threaded flange plus a larger gas cap that is now made of plastic rather than metal. AJP says that the new design makes it less likely for dirt or debris to fall into the tank when removing the cap since the cap is almost the same size as the opening in the seat and is threaded into a flange on the tank that is smaller and raised above the main tank area.

The PR4 also receives a smaller 45-tooth aluminum rear sprocket that is claimed to be better suited to the power of the engine in a wider range of conditions. Both models receive the Reikon clutch perch assembly found on the AP5R, and both are also swathed in new graphics. As with the PR5R, the PR4 and PR3 have had their sidestand auto-retract deleted for 2016.

We’ve been in contact with AJP, and we are hoping to be able to test some of their models very soon, so stay tuned. For more information on AJP motorcycles, visit www.motoajp.com.
