Every solitary mechanic wishes for a third hand, an assistant can take items from us, keep them in order, and hand them back–while our hands keep stuff carefully in place.
Without help, we must repeatedly stop, lay things out somewhere close, then reach to retrieve them while holding tools or parts at precise angles. And, when we suddenly realize the urgent need for a catch-pan mid-procedure, we have to avoid knocking those pieces into disarray or oblivion as we scramble to grab something else. That’s where Magnogrip’s magnetic wristband can really be a time saver.
For $15.99 (or less from online discounters, such as Amazon.com), the Magnogrip wristband won’t replace an assistant, but it can eliminate some of these frustrations. Three powerful magnets, sandwiched in separate pockets between sturdy ballistic polyester and soft fabric, are secured to a wrist or convenient nearby object via hook & loop patches. Fasteners, parts, and small tools can be organized and held at the ready during surgery. No more dropping, no more groping. We’ve found the MagnoGrip very helpful, so much so that now we feel a bit naked without it when doing maintenance and repairs.
Tip: Because its magnets immediately make it stick solidly to the side of a washing machine tub, cleaning an oily, greasy MagnoGrip is better done by simply slathering it with a cream-type hand cleaner (e.g. GoJo) and then rinsing it off with a hose.
There are a wide variety of other MagnoGrip aids available, including tool belts, holsters, and even suspenders–all with magnetized areas for holding loose items while you use your hands for other tasks. Check out the assortment on their website.
