Tyla Rattray will miss between four and six weeks while recuperating from thumb surgery after a crash at the GP of Italy last weekend.
Well, who didn’t see that one coming?
The Red Bull IceOne Husqvarna factory MXGP team has announced that MX1 rider Tyla Rattray will be out of action for up to six weeks following surgery to repair a damaged thumb ligament sustained at round 10 of the 2014 FIM World Motocross Championship series in Maggiora, Italy.
Rattray, who was frustrated by a number of crashes at the Maggiora circuit last weekend, finally did himself in when he crashed on the opening lap of the second moto. He was unable to get back underway and did not finish the moto. Scans on Monday, June 16, revealed ligament damage to his right thumb, and Rattray underwent surgery to repair the damage that same day.
The surgery was another disappointing setback for Rattray, who had worked hard to return to action already this season after suffering a pre-season finger injury.
“I’m hugely disappointed with what’s happened,” Rattray said. “Getting injured again is really frustrating for the team, Husqvarna and myself. We’ve been working so hard to get back up to speed following our bad start to the year. It sucks to be knocked back to square one again. When I crashed in race two I knew I hurt my thumb, but I also knocked myself about and thought I would be okay. But after visiting my doctor on Monday I was immediately brought into surgery to reattach the ligament to my right thumb. I’m now looking at a four week recovery before I can start to ride again.”
Antti Pyrhönen, Red Bull IceOne Husqvarna Factory Racing Team Manager, said that unfortunately injuries are a part of the sport, adding “But I think we’ve suffered our fair share of them this year. It’s been a tough year for Tyla, but we know he can come back strong and achieve top five results like he did at the MXGP of Great Britain. At the moment the priority is for him to recover properly and then hopefully start to ride again in four weeks.”
