Chad Reed and Christophe Pourcel earn $1000 in Motosport.com holeshot dough at High Point; pair of privateers earn RC Hard Charger Award.
Discount Tire/TwoTwo Motorsports Kawasaki’s Chad Reed and Valli Motorsports Yamaha’s Christophe Pourcel were both $1000 richer after last weekend’s 38th annual UPMC Sports Medicine High Point National, presented by United Bank and Coastal Drilling East, at High Point Raceway in Pennsylvania, even though neither man won a moto.
Both Reed and Pourcel took full advantage of the $500 holeshot bonus per moto offered by Motosport.com, with Reed grabbing both holeshots in the 450cc class while Pourcel did the same in the 250cc class.
Through partnerships with series sponsors, the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship recognizes the riders for a number of achievements besides the moto and overall wins. Riders can also lay claim to the Oakley Bomb Fastest Lap Program, the MotoSport.com Holeshot Award in each moto, and the Ricky Carmichael Hard Charger Award.
At High Point, Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen took home his second Oakley Bomb Award of the season. Roczen topped the lap charts with a fast time of 2 minutes, 10.760 seconds, beating out former series champion James Stewart, who would go on to win the race. Stewart’s fastest time was a 2:11.612.
Yamaha has had a strong start to the season in the 250cc class, with Yamalube/Star Racing Yamaha’s Jeremy Martin dominating the first two races of the season. At High Point, Martin was the fastest rider in practice with a time of 2:07.218, to claim the Oakley Bomb Award for the first time this season. Pourcel was hot on Martin’s heels in search of his fourth consecutive Oakley Bomb Award of the year with a time of 2.08.064. Once racing commenced, Martin and Pourcel finished second and fifth overall respectively while Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett swept to two moto wins for the overall win.
For the first time in the 2014 season, two different riders earned the RC Hard Charger Award, each showing impressive come-from-behind charges in attempts to better his overall results. Privateers Shane Sewell, aboard a Munn Racing KTM, and Zack Williams, riding for RSR, each earned the award in their respective classes. Westville, Indiana native Sewell charged hard through the 450cc pack in Moto 2, closing a gap from 36th to 22nd to pass an impressive 14 riders. Williams, from Elko, Minnesota, closed the same 14-rider gap in the 250cc Class, climbing from from 34th to 20th in the first moto.
The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship takes a break this weekend, but it will resume with round five, the Red Bull Tennessee National in Blountville, Tennessee, June 28.
