Most two-stroke motocross bike owners know it doesn’t take a lot to convert their machines into decent off-road machines, but in the case of Yamaha, why bother when the factory already does it for you? When it debuted in 2016, the Yamaha YZ250X was so good that our bros at Motorcycle.com named it as their Dirt Bike of the Year. The YZ250X’s 249cc two-stroke engine features a slightly milder state of tune than the YZ250 due to slightly less compression, milder power valve tuning and a thanks to lower compression, altered power valve settings and a different expansion chamber. It also features a wide-ratio five-speed transmission, off-road-tuned KYB SSS fork and KYB shock and a more off-road friendly 18-inch rear wheel and tire. Regardless of what happens with the advent of fuel-injected two-strokes, we expect the Yamaha X model to be on our list of Ten Best Two-Stroke Dirt Bikes for Off-Road riding for quite some time to come.
