Born in New Jersey, James “Whitey” Martino moved with his family to Southern California during the 1940s, and fell in love with the desert, where he quickly became one of the fastest motorcycle racers ever to traverse the hostile terrain. A member of the infamous Checkers Motorcycle Club in Southern California, Martino gave the Husqvarna brand its first AMA District 37 Desert Championship in 1969. He also made an appearance in the movie On Any Sunday, and he appeared on the cover of the premier issue of Dirt Bike Magazine in June 1971. Martino passed away in 2005.
