Cody Webb tops the FIM SuperEnduro opener in Lodz, Poland; four Americans finish in the top 10.
Fresh off his successful defense of the GEICO AMA EnduroCross Series championship in America, RPM KTM’s Cody Webb won round one of the 2016 Maxxis FIM SuperEnduro World Championship last Saturday night.
Webb barely eeked out the win in a dramatic event at the Atlas Arena in Lodz, Poland. beating fellow KTM rider Jonny Walker of Great Britain to claim the series points lead in the first of the six-round series. Webb set the tone early by robbing Walker and reigning series champion Taddy Blazusiak of the Akrapovic SuperPole award and picking up three bonus points. Then, in the first of three finals, Webb had to work his way through the pack to catch the leader, Walker. Webb took over when Walker made a mistake, and the American went on to strike the first blow of the night with a win.
However, a bad start in the second final left Webb caught in traffic for much of the race and wound up sixth, but countryman Colton Haaker was the man on a mission. The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna rider rebounded from his fifth-place finish in the first race to score a win over Walker, which would later prove to be crucial for Webb. When Webb came back to win the third and final race of the night, he narrowly landed the event win over the more consistent Walker, who went 2-2-2 on the evening. Webb’s SuperPole effort arguably proved to be the difference, as it gave him the one-point cushion he needed for the win. Walker and Blazusiak completed the podium, with the Polish rider making a nice recovery to finish seventh after crashing in race three.
Americans Taylor Robert and Haaker finished fourth and fifth respectively after tying on points. Robert’s pair of third-place finishes in races one and three broke the tie. Ty Tremaine finished seventh to give USA riders four of the top 10 spots in the race.
