Retrospective: 20 Years of Yamaha YZ Four-Stroke MXers

Yamaha introduced the YZ400F four-stroke motocross machine 20 years ago. Here’s a look back at the generations of YZs that lead to the 2018 YZ450.

The third-generation YZ450F was Yamaha’s first to bump up against the maximum allowable displacement for AMA National Motocross competition. a 62.4mm stroke pushed the total displacement to 449cc, with the engine now producing more than 52 horsepower. The YZ450F represented such a leap in performance that Yamaha opted to fit it with a four-speed transmission rather than the five-speed found in the previous two versions. A new chassis and new bodywork were also used, as was a new KYB twin chamber cartridge fork, helping to lower weight from 250 lbs. into the low 230s.
