Retrospective: 20 Years of Yamaha YZ Four-Stroke MXers

Yamaha introduced the YZ400F four-stroke motocross machine 20 years ago. Here’s a look back at the generations of YZs that lead to the 2018 YZ450.

For the next generation YZ450F, Yamaha engineers focused on bringing back some of the brutality to the YZ450F while striking the balance with its easy-to-ride feel. New intake cams, 1mm larger (37mm) intake valves, .5mm larger (30.5mm) exhaust valves and new intake and exhaust ports helped the Yamaha to make more power up top while a flat-top piston replaced the domed piston but retained the same 12.5:1 compression ratio as before to improve low- and mid-range torque. A new bilateral beam aluminum chassis moved the front wheel 10mm closer to the center of the bike and featured a stronger swingarm pivot. The chassis also had more front wheel weight bias to improve front-end traction when cornering.
